Message from the President

 #StrongRootsStrongFuture

Well does anyone see a hint of fall?  I am still looking through the drips of sweat for the changing of the leaves.  When I think of the beautiful colors painted against the mountains it always reminds me that even nature gets a restart.  Once we have started up the year and getting a rhythm we need to harvest our restart to continue to stay strong for the rest of the year.

I live vicariously looking at all the social media, it reminds me why Georgia is on everyone's mind.  Maybe I’m a little partial, but I can't help but bust at the seam with pride.  I hope every day when a child wakes up and gets ready for school, that school meals come to mind when they are planning their day.  We need to make sure that we are making it inviting for them to come to the lunch room.  They have choices even if it is going to the gym or hanging out with friends.  I love being the first face they see and trying to get them on the right track for them to be successful.

I am starting to travel across this state and I can't wait to see what you all are up to because I know that I will be amazed.  In my area we are gearing up for the Georgia National Fair in Perry.  The fair is a wonderful atmosphere with all the lights and the great smell of all the food.  I am getting better at slowing down and enjoying the moment.  This year I am trying to remember what it was like when I started as a Food Assistant.  Those are my “roots” for how I have grown in School Nutrition.  I remember my first day was making over 400 cinnamon rolls from scratch. I went home with flour and powdered sugar in my hair and some of it even stuck together.  When my husband asked if I enjoyed it I looked up at him and said I am not even sure if I am going back.  Every morning I am glad that I returned and have branched out into areas I thought were not possible.

I hope that as the Fall Season approaches you use it to drop the leaves that are weighing you down and renew your soul.

Strong Roots, Strong Future

Nominate Your School Nutrition Hero

When we hear stories about school nutrition professionals doing exceptional things to make a difference, we are inspired! It often reminds us of the individuals that we know who also go “above and beyond” their daily jobs. Help us identify this year’s heroes by nominating those individuals who go beyond their everyday responsibilities to make a positive impact in their schools and their communities. The heroes chosen for this honor will be recognized at the School Nutrition Foundation’s 4th Annual Celebration of School Nutrition Heroes, which will be held on Monday, April 3, 2017, during SNA’s Legislative Action Conference in Washington, D.C.

Visit www.schoolnutrition.org/SNHeroesCelebration to learn more and to secure a nomination form. The deadline for nominations is Friday, October 21, 2016.
