Join us for the 2018 GSNA Equipment Academy at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry. Our equipment vendors will give you all the information you need to prepare for changes in the economy, in nutrition standards and in student preferences. You will receive tips and tricks to help elevate your school nutrition program and to become more efficient and energy conscious.

2017-18 Culinary Arts Competition 
Be sure to enter your local association culinary contest and submit your winners to the District Culinary Arts chair by February 1, 2018 for the district competitions.
All district winners should be submitted to the GSNA office by March 1, 2018.
The State Culinary Arts Competition will be March 13, 2018 @ Helms College in Macon.
State winners will receive monetary awards: First - $250 Second - $175 Third - $100

State winners will be announced at the GSNA Annual Conference - April 2018 in Savannah.

Breakfast Flatbread:
Prepare a hearty WG flatbread that will help your students start their day off with a unique and delicious entrée. Sweet, savory, spicy or all of the above…it’s your choice!
Lunch in a Cup: No time to waste...prepare a lunch that is served in a cup so your students are eating healthy on the go. To get you started, be sure to include at least 2 oz Meat/Meat Alternate, 1oz WG and ¼ cup of Veggies.
Cobbler, Crunch or Crisp with Blueberries and Peaches: Nothing says comfort like a cobbler! Prepare your best cobbler, crisp or crunch that includes at least 1oz WG and ¾ cup of Blueberries & Peaches.

Message from the President
 
 #TheJourney

A home, food on the table, clothes on our back, job that we enjoy, family that we love are just a few of the many things we should be grateful for today. Each and every day, not just during Thanksgiving, we need to pause momentarily and express GRATITUDE. Not just to family but friends, co-workers, and even those that provide such small services for us and are always overlooked….like the mail carrier, the garbage truck driver or even the convenience store clerk. You see, it is proven that if you begin to say “thank you” for the little things, then when BIG stuff hits you, the mountain doesn’t seem so big any more.
As we continue on this journey through the fall, our lives begin to move at a more rapid pace. We see the holidays looming in the near future and thoughts of the gifts that have to be bought, the parties that we must attend and the food that must be prepared can become overwhelming. Instead of dreading the season before us, make your thoughts impeccable and have a spirit of gratitude. It will make this time much more enjoyable so that when school opens back up in January, you don’t sigh with regret in how much you wished the holiday vacation away.
Many of us are much more fortunate than others and this is a great time to give back to others. Our NOURISH project this year has so far been phenomenal with many of you giving multiple times. Why not start a community food drive in your own kitchens? Count down the days to Christmas Holidays by having everyone bring a canned food item each day. When the last day of school rolls around, count up your food donations and then drop it off at the food pantry. So many will be hungry during the season, so this is great way to express your
GRATITUDE for all that you have been blessed with as well as being an example of giving unselfishly. I challenge each kitchen in the state of Georgia to make a food donation….We are One!
Our very own Dr. Josephine Martin is a pioneer in the field of child nutrition. She has been a vocal advocate for child nutrition, influencing legislation on the community, state and federal levels. The Josephine Martin National Policy Fellow is an opportunity for a school nutrition employee or manager, who is interested in
GROWing as an advocate, to attend LAC as a first timer. This is a great way for members to give back in honor for what Dr. Martin began so many years ago. Her giving spirit and love of children has been the cornerstone for the advancement of child nutrition to where it is today and where it is moving to in the future. So as GEORGIA School Nutrition members, I hope that you will show how grateful you are by giving a donation to this fellowship in honor of Dr. Josephine Martin. As Thanksgiving approaches, I hope you will make some time for YOU! Reflect on your blessings, show

I am thankful for YOU and I hope that you know how grateful I am for your support and hard work in making sure that our organization continues to be the rock of our profession!

 SNA FAME Awards

Congratulations to two of our own on receiving the Foodservice Achievement Management Excellence (FAME) Awards! Karen Halford, assistant director, Gwinnett County Public Schools will be awarded the Silver Spirit Award and Kelly Schlein, nutrition services director, Richmond County will be awarded the Silver Special Achievement Award. The winners will be honored at the School Nutrition Association’s School Nutrition Industry Conference in January in New Orleans. The program is sponsored by Basic American Foods, Schwan’s Food Service Inc. and Tyson Foods. For more information on the FAME Awards and to attend the SNIC in New Orleans click here.


GSNA Scholarship & Grant-in-Aid News 
GSNA would like to announce scholarship and grant in aid news!
We are adding a new submission date for GSNA Members. Members can now submit their scholarship forms in December starting this year. Your winter deadline date will be December 15th. This applies to Members ONLY. Scholarships and Grant in Aid for children of members will still be March 1st.

Other Scholarship & Grant Opportunities – LAC in Washington D.C.!
In an ongoing effort to help its members develop professionally, the Georgia School Nutrition Foundation is offering a scholarship to attend SNA’s Legislative Action Conference (LAC) 2018.
There will be two scholarships available for first time attendees. The recipients of the scholarships will get funding up to $2,500 to cover registration, airfare, hotels, and meals for the National Legislative Action Conference in Washington, D.C. (March 4-6, 2018). The recipients will be responsible for making registration and travel arrangements. GSNA will reimburse all expenses up to $2,500 for each recipient. SNS Credential Exam Grant
GSN Foundation is also offering a $500 grant to cover expenses for a member that is sitting for the School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) Credentialing exam. If you are thinking of becoming SNS Credentialed apply for the funding to help with your expenses such as books, study guides, application fee, etc. The deadline to apply for the grant is December 15th.
